All year I’ve been hoping to have the opportunity to cover a Nashville Predators hockey game for USA Today.  Even though I never actually got the chance, I was able to shoot hockey for the first time during the annual I-65 Face Off between the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Alabama Frozen Tide.  I’ve got to say, hockey has got to be one of the hardest sports to watch as a photographer.  The problem I have is that the photo holes you have to look through only allow you to see between the net and center ice.  Anything beyond that, you’re unable to see anything with your camera.  Before I actually tried it, I thought hockey would be just like basketball, but I was certainly wrong.  It’s so much faster than any other sport out there, and I’d be lucky if I caught the puck in any of my pictures.  Since I wasn’t having much luck with the action, I thought it would be fun to spend the rest of the game just looking for cool features.  The great thing about covering a game with a really small crowd, is the great access you can actually get.  Hopefully I’ll be able to get better at hockey as time goes on.  Thanks for reading.

This past week I had the epic opportunity to cover the 2013 Southeastern Conference Basketball Tournament at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.  I’m forever grateful to my friend and fellow USA Today colleague Randy Sartin for recommending me to our editor.  It was ultimately because of him that I received the assignment. I was so excited because I know that the SEC is one of the top conferences in college basketball, and the action and emotion is so much better than what I usually cover in the Sun Belt with Western Kentucky athletics.  Even better, is that it was held in my absolutely favorite city, and in my favorite sports building.  Luckily I wasn’t on my own during the week, I had the pleasure of working with Don McPeak, long time USA Today staffer from Nashville.  Don is a really great guy, and I’m incredibly blessed that I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with so many great photographers in my life such as hims.  I’m glad that he was so well receptive to working with someone as young as me.  I think together him and I did a really great job making sure that both teams were covered during each game.  Visit here to see all of our work from the tournament.

Throughout the week I was seeing my pictures being used on numerous websites that were talking about the winning teams, and I also even saw that one of my pictures used on ESPN’s Sports Center.  I actually have no real way of knowing which newspapers and print publications have used my pictures.  It’s a really great feeling knowing that all of your hard work is being used.  It was a lot of work mostly due to the short turn around and no real break in between games.  Thirteen games in just four days can really wear a person out.  I’m really glad that my basketball season didn’t end a few weeks ago, because I really wasn’t happy with the work that I had produced this year.  I really feel like I made up for it during the tournament, and I think I actually came back with some really great pictures.  What I love the most about going and working at events like these, is that I get to meet and introduce myself to the Associated Press, Getty Images, and Reuter photographers that are there.  I’m all about meeting people that could possibly help me out in the future.

I’m really hoping that this isn’t the last of the big events that I get to cover for USA Today, and I hope that I get asked to go again next year.  I had an absolutely unforgettable time that I know I will always remember.  I really enjoyed working with Don and I hope that I’ll get the chance to work with him again in the near future on other assignments.  Thanks for taking the time to read my blog and look at my pictures, I’m glad that I’m back to sharing my work regularly again and getting feedback from others.  I’ll be posting more in the next week or so as I’m starting to work on some photo stories for my Intro to Multimedia class.  More to come.

Had the fun opportunity to go to the international friendly soccer game between the United States Olympic Women’s team and Scotland.  I really didn’t go to a lot of soccer games this year, and I’ve really forgotten just how exciting the sport is.  To me the best part, was how excited and into it the fans were.  I’m glad that the United States won, and I hope next year I get to go to a lot more professional soccer games.  I’ve got a lot of my recent work saved up from the last few weeks I’ll be sharing on my blog soon.  Thanks for looking.

Back in September USA Today Sports Images (formerly US Presswire) reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in becoming a contract photographer for them.  Because I was agreeable to the day rate, and because I knew I would get some really cool assignments, I joined the organization.  Since then, I’ve covered a lot of Kentucky Wildcat and Louisville Cardinal sports.  While I do have to drive pretty far sometimes for the assignments, it works out because I have a lot of friends in Lexington and Louisville.  It’s almost like I’m getting paid to go visit and spend the weekend with my friends.  This past January I was assigned to go to a lot of Kentucky women’s basketball games.  I was blown away at just how much more exciting SEC basketball is compared to the SunBelt Conference.  I was even more impressed with the exceptional fan support for these ladies.  I wanted to share my favorite pictures from the series of games that month that I was assigned to.  Thanks for looking.

For the first time in a few years, Western Kentucky was actually offered the chance to play in a bowl game.  Bowl games are just glorified scrimmages since teams must be chosen to play in them in the absence of a playoff system.  The Little Caesars Pizza Bowl chose Western Kentucky and Central Michigan to play in their game that is held every year on the day after Christmas in Detroit.  Even though my colleagues and I had a really rough road trip through a snowstorm getting to Michigan from Kentucky, we actually had a blast at the game.  I really hope that Big Red has the chance for post-season play again while I’m still a student, and hopefully in a much warmer climate.  I’m still working on sharing more of my work from the last few months.  Thanks for reading.
